Kansas Advancing Women has endorsed the following candidates:
Erin Thompson – Roeland Park City Council
Erin Thompson is running for the Roeland Park City Council in Ward 3. Erin has lived in Roeland Park for nearly five years and she’s proud to call Roeland Park home because of its commitment to diversity, nondiscrimination and the arts. Erin practices law with her father and she’s the Johnson County presence for the Wichita-based law firm, Thompson Law Firm, LLC. So she understands the importance of small businesses.
Erin is a sixth-generation Kansan and nearly all of those generations were involved in public service. From her great-great aunt who served on the Topeka School Board to her father who was Senator Nancy Kassebaum’s treasurer and served as United States Attorney for the District of Kansas, and her uncle who recently ran against Kris Kobach for Secretary of State; Erin comes from a family of engaged citizens. In fact, she spent the first year of her life on Senator Kassebaum’s 1978 U.S. Senate campaign. Erin was raised to believe public service is a great way to give back to the community, and she would love to serve Roeland Park.
Leslie Soden – Lawrence City Commission
Leslie Soden is running for the Lawrence City Commission. Born and raised in Topeka, and a 5th generation Kansan, Leslie moved to Lawrence 15 years ago, and has never regretted it. For the last eight years Leslie has owned and operated a pet sitting business called Pet Minders, a business she built from scratch. Prior to that, she worked for seven years as an IT/computer professional. Community involvement has been especially important to Leslie. As a graduate of Leadership Lawrence, an appointed member of the Joint Economic Development Council, and through active involvement in my neighborhood, I bring a unique combination of experience to City Hall.
Lauren Tice Miller – Shawnee Heights School Board
Lauren Tice Miller is running for Position 1A of the USD 450 Shawnee Heights School Board. Lauren is a graduate of Shawnee Heights and is a parent of a second-grader, a Cub Scout den mother, and an active member on the PTO at Shawnee Heights Elementary.
Lauren holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Communication Studies from Kansas State University. She is currently the Communications Director for Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley. From being on the front lines every day, she is truly concerned for the future of public education in Kansas.
As a school board member she will work to ensure Shawnee Heights provides – as it has done for years – the quality of education that is essential to creating well-rounded students who are prepared for a world of opportunities.
Leah Fliter – Manhattan-Ogden School Board
Leah Fliter is running for re-election to the Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education. She will bring strong, thoughtful leadership to the challenges facing public education in Kansas.
Leah is a native Kansan who was elected to the USD 383 board in 2011. She has two sons, one a Manhattan High School graduate and one attending MHS. Leah reported on education for four years at The Manhattan Mercury, which gave her unique insight into K-12 and the Regents system.
Leah is a graduate of Leadership Manhattan and the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program.
